Therm a Rest NeoAir

I used a Therm a Rest Neo Air air mattress during the recent cold spell for a couple of nights out and was very surprised to find that it worked very well. Indeed, on one night I stayed warm at minus 15C - no cold embrace from the breast of Mother Earth at all.
I was surprised because the first model I had went down on me (if you pardon the expression) the first night I used it. I repaired it and it did the same thing again next time I used it. As you can imagine, I lost confidence completely in it. However, I got a replacement and it's been fine, other than I find it a tad narrow and my arms dangle over the edges.
Will continue to use it into the summer, although I still have this sneaky feeling that it's slightly fragile...

RE: Therm a Rest NeoAir

I've slept on my 3/4 length NeoAir four or five times now, including once in just below freezing temps in combination with the foam mat from my OMM Jirishanca. I've found it the most commfortable camping mat I've used (tho I've not tried one of the Exped ones) and it's not let me down, so to speak. The only problem I have with it is that every time I use it I expect it to deflate, having read all the comments from other owners.

RE: Therm a Rest NeoAir

We have used ours (3/4 length) about 50 times each with no problem. If anything it is more comfortable than our 3/4 expeds. We put that down to it having more internal structure so it does not sway so much.
I do not think it is warm enough for winter though, we use our expeds then.

Mmm, I used mine at circa -15C without any problem. I was really impressed.

RE: Therm a Rest NeoAir

I have laid on both exped and neoair alternately side by side on a cold night in our garden. This is with our double top bag. I am sure I can feel the difference. Neoair is suppoedly R value 2.5 and exped more like R value 5 I should be able to notice that. With no other insulation under me the difference is as stark as it will get. You probably had a nice mummy bag to help the neoair out a bit. We slept in a deep freeze on a bealach just below the highest Fannich just before Christmas. Crisp absolutely clear and so cold your hand stuck to the ice. I guess that is -15C I did not have a thermometer. I was glad we had our expeds then. Mind you you need a good thickness of foam to equal the neoair!

You are quite correct Derek, I did have a good sleeping bag but I normally sleep warm anyway.
