Wild Boar fell

We just walked a walk Ian Battersby described in a previous TGO. It sounded boggy so we waited until everything was frozen. Thank heavens we did. I would not have liked to do it on an unfrozed February. We spent long periods walking over frozen groundwater Ian clearly likes to bag summits and as we do too we often seem to follow in his footsteps. It was beautiful on a clear day, slow pathless going until we got the walls where the snow still lingered flat and hard and surprisingly grippy. The little tarns were all frozen over and the big river we were supposed to cross had so much thin ice and slippy ice covered stones that we stayed on the left side of it on the ascent of Baugh fell. we saw one person all day

I guess that was around Holmes Moss?? I did it in summer - though not an especially dry one. It looked like the rest of the walk would be reasonable, but it's all part of the challenge of heading into the wilds far from the path I guess. Hope you enjoyed it. Anyone else wanting to take advantage of the frozen conditions can see the walk in the Oct issue. I think I saw it in the walks section of the besite too.

I was on Gt Knoutberry and Whernside yesterday, and came across the same frozen yet very grippy snow. The top layer seemed to be like small ball bearings - the ones they show you in snow layers that cause avalanches. Easy to walk on though.

RE: Wild Boar fell

Hi Ian all the ridges would have been fine in any weather. It was perfect conditions for crossing bogs, the other option was Bleaklow. We could see Whernside from where we were.
