Top Tips

Has anyone got any useful tips that they would like to share?

Maybe it's a cheaper way to do something, or a moment of lateral thinking that solved a problem.

Here's my offering to kick it off:

For a long time I didn't carry a sewing needle with me because I couldn't be bothered to find a reasonable place to carry one. Now I take my Vitorinox Swiss Army Knife, pull out the tweezers, place the needle inside and replace the tweezers. The needle is carried perfectly securely with your main tool. :D

rip of the covers from OS maps before taking them out on the hills - shaves weight & makes folding them far easier

Don't take pot scourers or washing up liquid camping - they only get stinky/leak. Use sphagnum moss, grass or heather depending on the nature of the dirty pot (moss best for getting rid of fry-up fat) and you'll get your mess tins nice and shiny.

Always carry a length of cord with you. It can be used as an emergency lace, tent rigging, etc. Carry it on your pack as a compression strap for when/if you need it.
Always carry a few vaseline rubbed cotton wool balls in a small (film) container. You never know when you might need a fire in damp conditions. It can also be used to help chaving.

If you take a shower on an official campsite use you grundies as a flannel to wash yourself with. They'll get a good cleaning at the same time... Although I always think twice about washing my face though :D

On day hikes I always leave a Holdall in the boot of the car that contains a complete change of clothes, a pair of trainers, plus food and drink. I've been glad of these on more than one occasion

Trail head vanity pack.

Post one of the above to the campsite, B&B, hostel or whatever that's at the end of your walk. Shampoo, bath soak, foot cream, razor, etc and a set of clean clothes.

Learn how to carve a wooden spoon ala Ray Mears. They are exception light (the more practice the lighter they get) and can be used in any pot or pan and are free to replace when they are too old, broken or lost.

Plus they are far better for the enviornment then Plastic or Titanium sporks.

James (K) great tip re the roma scale. I use Harveys maps alot and always have problems with the finer points of grid refs. I guess they are also sold thru Harveys website too?
