nice photos. was up in robin hood's bay/ whitby a few weekends ago. nearly got caught out by the tide at bogal hole! had to wade up to my knees. did a great walk north along the coast out of whitby/ sandsend - you can walk throught the old railway tunnels.. its good fun but take a torch!

I haven't been north along the railbed from Bay yet but it's a good walk south at least and you can always make a loop back along the Cleveland way or on the shore if the tides out.
I remember as a kid being warned about getting cut-off at Bogle Hole - it's no fun getting cut-off at the Bogles.

"Cut-off at Bogle Hole". The mind boggles...

It'll boggle over when you realise that the "Hole" is set between 2 cheeks (North and South Cheek). I'm not kidding.

I was surprised to hear about folks getting cut off here when there's a route down to the beach at the hostel from memory. I guess you were on the beach on a sand bank perhaps?

I guess there must be a way in which the tide cuts you off from both retreat to Bay and access to the footpath (Cleveland Way) above. I've always wondered about that too Ian but I've never been cut-off there so I can onlly guess too.

If your looking at suspect names in that area then how about:-

Cumboots (a farm) (near Scalby)
Noddle End (Silpho)
Turkey carpet (Silpho)
Bell End (Rosedale)
Cock Flat (Raisdale)
Old Kit Bield (a pool - presumably where you chuck your leaking boots)
Raper's farm (Near Newtondale)
Robin Hood's Butts (near Ravenscar)
Bottom House (Hawsker)
Swallow head farm (Fylingdale)
Knaggy house farm (Sneatonthorpe)
Hardstruggle cottages (Eskdaleside)
Ugglebarnby (once known locally as Uglybuggerby)
Cock Heads (Glaisdale moor)
Cockayne Ridge (Bransdale)
and of course Great Fryup Dale (or Little Fryup Dale if you're weight watching)
not to mention Roseberry Topping (presumably a pudding after the above)

My award for a bloody useless name has to go to the North York Moors place name 'Peat Hill'.

End of childish giggling now I' away to get a life.

NB - Sorry but I just remembered a farm name from Easter Ross - Fannyfield.

I've just written a feature for TGO about some of the curious place names to be found in the Scottish Borders. Most people have probably heard of Rotten Bottom below White Coomb but there's also Muckle Knees and my own favourite - Dead for Cauld! Very appropriate for the conditions we have in the highlands at the moment.
