Happy snowshoeing...

In case anyone is getting itchy for some snowshoe walking, I can report that conditions are already very good in the Alps. I was out in the Mont Blanc massif Saturday and we enjoyed sunny blue skies and knee-deep snow. This morning I woke up to another fresh dump - happy days!

I attach a link to a picture taken Saturday above Chamonix.

I've used snowshoes a lot here in Scotland this winter, although the snow is too icy now. Best conditions for snowshoeing appear to be when the snow is still unconsolidated. The ways thing are now you need crampons.

Yes, I've used snowshoes a fair bit recently too, especially in the woods, fields and low moors where the snow was deep and unconsolidated. I found them better than skis in deep snow. But as Cameron says it's crampon conditions now.

Wonder if we'll have another 'awful' (meaning good) winter this year...

Snow gave me 2.5 bonus days off work this year so I spent them on my snowshoes in the local fields and forests. They weren't strictly necessary but when else am I going to use them?!

I am a volunteer ranger for a local council, I took my snowshoes (and a 2nd pair) on patrol one day, my partner and I could sail up the hills we saw others struggling on. What a great day!

Fingers crossed for another good snowshoeing winter like last year. It might come sooner than we think. It was only 1degreeC here this morning. We might soon be getting snowy summers too. God forbid...
