Gear test Gripe

I expect that your readership remains on a par with most outdoor mags that Three men to every one woman reads the mag.
On this forum the balance is prob four or five to one
On your gear tests they are nearly all women lately. You have three testers and only one is a women but in the mag and on this site the tests are heavily weighted towards women,

Why?

RE: Gear test Gripe

Maybe we're trying to get more women to read the magazine!

RE: Gear test Gripe

What about getting more children to read TGO too?!

i.e. Any chance of the occasional kiddies gear tests? Boots, waterproofs, specially made items, etc. (After all, you did review equipment for dogs a couple of years ago!).

I'm sure this might be welcomed by some of us?

RE: Gear test Gripe

We'll have a feature on children's gear in the May issue.

I was going to ask if you can hire children to carry your rucksack on a walk - but that's probably tasteless so I won't !!!!!!!!!! :-)

The going rate is about £20 for baby sitting when they just sit and text or facebook their mates. I'd imagine the rates for being outside and out of reach of technology would be beyond most of us.

Maybe you will loose the men that do buy the magazine. Why is everything these days set out to get new customers at the cost of the old loyal ones. Maybe I should become a new customer of Trail then.

Angry climber, I'm not sure where you get the idea that the gear tests are heavily weighted towards women, because they aren't. There aren't even women's gear tests in every issue (there used to be but this hasn't been so for many months).

Maybe this is a golden opportunity to try cross dressing?

RE: Gear test Gripe

We used to have a women's gear feature in every issue. Over a year we cut down on that and this year there is only a woman's gear feature every two to three months. With more and more women going to the hills I believe it's important we cater for them in TGO as well as the men. Incidentally TGO was the first outdoor magazine in the UK to run women specific gear reviews. Some of the others have followed but not sure if that includes Trail, Angry Climber!
