Braemar to Montrose

I know this route is used by challengers and I am trying to find out what its like crossing over from Glen Muick car park to Glen Lee over the Muckle Cairn as theres no path marked on the OS map, also is it possible to follow the Esk to Montrose instead of waliking on the road ?
Any info appreciated.

We went that way from Loch Muick to Tarfside on the 2009 Challenge. Easy route finding up the valley and then over or round the hill to Sheilin of Mark. Muckle Cairn either visible or straightforward compass bearing from there. Some peat hags. Found the top of Muckle Cairn a bit confusing in a hail storm but eventually worked out which track for Glen Lee. Nice walk down to Tarfside. Crossed over river on bridge immediately south of Tarfside and then had lovely walk on soft springy turf then track down the south bank of the Esk to Edzell. I'd recommend all of it except boggy peaty Muckle Cairn in a hailstorm but you can't have everything.
