Ardess wild camp site

Hi, l'm new to this forum so Hi to all.

I am walking the West Highland Way in September and plan to camp at the designated wild camp site just after Rowardennen youth hostel, my question is "has anyone on this forum camped there before? l have heard that it is plagued by midges?"

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Rob

RE: Ardess wild camp site

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the forum.
Basically, the whole of Loch Lomondside can be a bit of a midgie hell. As you probably know, any decent breeze keeps the midgies down. As most of the WHW passes through trees by Loch Lomond, the camping spots are pretty sheltered.
Carry a head net, and camp near a pub. ;)

Or go off the way and camp higher.

Hi Mike, many thanks for the advice, l have walked the WHW before and that was in March, before the dreaded wee beasties show there faces(or should that be teeth?)

Best wishes

Robert

RE: Ardess wild camp site

The little backpackers camp site at Ardess is absolutely fine, and within walking distance of the pub at Rowardennan. I camped there about a month ago, my wife was walking the WHW, and we had a completely midge free night. There are still midges around but we camped on a night when there a bit of a breeze. Some of the pitches are looking a bit tired, but there's running water and good views out over Loch Lomond. I've rarely seen anyone else camp there...
