2kg gear

As I've mentioned in other posts I've spent a lot of time thinking through my gear list. This is what I've come up with. I had a few criteria that I wanted to meet- I really enjoy the camping side of things so I wanted to be reasonably comfortable, I've had a couple of tries with a tarp/bivvy combo and prefer a tent and I want to eat hot food. This is a theoretical gear list at the moment- the only elements I've tried are the sleeping bag and the windshirt/gilet combo- the rest I bought while the pound was strong against the dollar. Part of my reasons for trying to get the weight so low was so that I could swap in heavier items if I decided I didn't get along with elements (I've got a feeling I may find gas much more convenient or I may want to go with a TAR). I should still have a super light kit (sub 2.5) even if I do go back. Although it is a theoretical list I have been backpacking a while and have a good idea of my limitaions and I really feel like this is a kit that allows for comfort.

crikey! uber-light gear list. I wish I could get as low as that but I cant in all honesty shed some of my "comfort" items such as the exped mattress. It has given me some oomph to go and try to trim out some other bits and pieces though. I am pretty happy TBH if my list comes in below 5Kg though.....:)

Still, food for thought....

Interesting. I guess this is a 3 season list?

What pertex jacket/troos combo do you use that only totals 125g?

Have you road testested the Gatewood Cape yet? Please can we have a review? I was considering getting the Lunar Solo for next years shelter (have to get a new winter tent first)

RE: 2kg gear

Looks radical to me! Guess our definitions of comfort differ considerably. I see no potty trowel/toilet kit/wash kit. Is that included in your camp/med kit at 30g? Also no dry bag for your (wonderful) PhD down bag?

RE: 2kg gear

yes no toilet trowel- apologies- I always carry one, a much trimmed and drilled B+Q plastic trowel 35g- 1885g total now. as for wash kit- I carry a tiny tube of alcohol gel which counts as a consumable and a chopped down toothbrush in my camp kit. I dry brush if I'm just away for the weekend. I also carry duck tape, a few plasters and stri strips, a tick hook, a stanley blade and a needle and thread. At the moment it is just a food for thought list- I haven't tested the gatewood cape or anything other than the sleeping bag and the gilet windshirt combo but a lot of what I have done is just swapping items for even lighter items. First impressions of the Gatewood cape are very good though incredible design, nicely executedand Six Moons are brilliant to deal with. I'll certainly review it when I can. I haven't got a dry bag for the sleeping bag because my pack is spinnaker and generally waterproof and the Gatewood Cape covers everything. Hopefully the combination should keep it dry... The pertex trousers are Reed pertex trousers, super basic trousers- no pockets/ ankle zips etc and the jacket is a rab quantum- because I buy evreything in small size and I trim excesses off they come up lighter than the advertised weight (advertised 150g for the 2 including stuffsack)

When I get it all out there though, it may actually not be my idea of comfort either.........:)

RE: 2kg gear

Nice list. I consider myself a UL/Lightweight backpacker, but i can't see myself going down the cape/poncho route. That's not for me.:)
I'm happy going sub 2kg for a fast and light weekend, but around 4kg is my usual for a longer trek.

RE: 2kg gear

Windshirt is a Rab Quantum and Gilet is a phd minim ultra, which is a fantastic piece of kit, if pricey.

RE: 2kg gear

Looks like an excellent set-up if everything works to plan, but I'll be interested in how the cape works out as a shelter. I've had a couple of "interesting" nights using a much larger tarp and walking poles when the weather has turned out much worse than expected.
